Raleigh Record Model DL-130L 10 Sped. Need advice servicing rear hub. Spun axle while wheel was off. Did not feel smooth. Only ID I found was on Cassette side Cone or lock nut - ATOM S.I.C.C. Made in ITALY. Rim is chrome plated Sturmey Archer.
Atom rear hub takes nine quarter inch balls per side
it will be necessary to remove gear block in order to repack hub
roughness you mention could be due to a bent axle
gear block removal is one of two types: notched or splined
you will need the appropriate removal tool
to work on axle set metric cone wrenches will be required, iirc size is fifteen mm
the Italian manufactured gear block is likely to be a replacement; the original would have been either Atom from France or the TDC brand from Britain (Thomas D. Cross & Sons Ltd of Birmingham)
change was fairly common when new in order to achieve a greater gear range
You'll need to take it all apart first. Rough or notchiness doesn't always mean damage. It's an old bike, and if the hubs never been serviced, it may do with simply a thorough cleaning, new balls and repack.
remove freewheel
place wheel over a catch basin or on towel. I use a large plastic mixing bowl I got at a thrift.
undo non-driveside locknut, spacer cone-nut.
pull axle out drive side
a magnet works good to pull out all ball bearings, 9 per side.
clean everything well (id clean and lube the freewheel also)
inspect the bearing surfaces
balls are cheap, I'd just replace them.
If things are messed up beyond a repack, I'd just replace the whole hub. But that's another can of worms.
